Outward
Bound!
We pedal off in a Northerly direction out of Dungog turning left at
the monument up the hill following the signs to Chichester Dam. Follow
the road around the corner to the right at the top of the hill.
Once you have left the town limits the first major turn off you will come to is a
left turn to Singleton/Gresford, DO NOT turn
left here but go straight ahead towards Chichester Dam.
Look out for traffic emerging from the side road.
As you cycle along the main road toward Bandon Grove, note the remains
of the original Chichester water pipeline on the left, now superceded
by the modern steel pipeline also on the left. A few kilometres further along
the road, 10km from the start, take the left turn onto the Salisbury road, DO NOT go straight
ahead. You are now heading toward
Salisbury
, DO NOT turn off on any side roads until you reach the Chichester Road!
At about 14 km you will come to Tillegra Bridge. This is approximately where the dam was to be built. Be careful on the wooden bridge and on the approach as the sightlines are not good. Crossing the river and cycling onward the road climbs from the bridge. From now on there are many crests and sharp bends. be careful to keep to the left and ride in single file. The scenery makes up for any inconveniencies! After 15.7km you will see the Bendolba/Salisbury Fire Brigade buildings on the left.
Cross the Munni Bridge and on the right is historic Munni House. Refreshments, toilets and water are available here. A good
place to stop for a quick rest and a stretch while you fill up your water
bottle. Also a good place to turn around and head back to Dungog for those who
would like a shorter ride. Further down the road at about 21.4 km you will pass the Settlers Cemetery at Quart Pot on the right. At the top of the hill at around 22.6 km turn right into the Chichester Rd toward Tunnybuc, Be careful doing the right turn as locals coming in the opposite direction will not be expecting traffic! Now, a nice downhill swoop to the Tunnybuc Bridge over the Williams River.
The Return to
Dungog.
No problems here, just turn around and head back the way you came. Careful turning left from the Chichester Rd back onto the Salisbury Rd, remember those locals! Follow the Salisbury Rd back keeping to the left and
taking care on the crests and corners. Once again, take care on the approach to the wooden bridge at Tillegra as it is narrow, winding and downhill with poor sightlines. Also, please be careful on the approach to the T-Junction on the main Chichester Dam Rd as it is downhill and has gravel on the junction, YOU MUST STOP AND GIVE WAY HERE! Turn right at the T-Junction and follow the main road back to Dungog. When you get to Dungog, go thru the
50k signs and head downhill to the Monument (make sure you can stop at
the Give Way at the bottom!). Turn right around the Monument back to the
Dungog Tourist Information Centre and you are home - Well Done! !
